What Are Dental Bridges?
Has the loss of a tooth affected your self-confidence? Losing even a single tooth can significantly impact your ability to eat and speak comfortably along with your physical appearance. Gaps left in the smile by tooth loss can also change how your teeth fit together and may cause other teeth to tilt or drift out of their positions when missing teeth are not replaced. To help patients achieve a confident and healthy smile after tooth loss, our skilled dentist offers custom dental bridges.
A dental bridge is made by molding two or more dental crowns together, into a single appliance. Created to be fixed or removable, bridges attached to surrounding teeth for support and effectively replace fill gaps left in the smile to restore a seamless cosmetic appearance. Bridges also help to evenly distribute biting forces in the mouth while keeping neighboring teeth from shifting, allowing patients to bite and chew comfortably once again. Keep tooth loss from causing changes to your bite and smile. Meet with our dentist at Made Ya Smile in Katy, TX and learn if a custom dental bridge is a good choice for replacing your missing teeth.

I had a mess in my mouth, I needed crowns on the molars, an implant, a root canal, and more than 4 cavities in different teeth…. 7 years suffering at the hands of many dentists… what one doctor fixed for me, the other destroyed… I couldn't even use dental floss for fear that the old amalgams would come off… Dr. Abraham Thomas is super detailed, not only take care of dental health… also pay attention to aesthetics! 🙏🏻 He and his entire team are Pros. @christian_sba"- C.S. / Google / Aug 05, 2022

Is a Dental Bridge Right for Me?
Missing teeth bring more than just an aesthetic concern to your smile. Losing teeth may impair your ability to speak, bite, chew, and smile with comfort and confidence. Depending on where in the mouth tooth loss occurs, you may no longer be able to eat certain foods and may lack the nutritional intake you need for good overall health. Dental bridges replace one or more teeth that are missing within the same area of the mouth and help to keep surrounding teeth in their proper places. Bridges not only improve biting function and speaking abilities, they also restore volume and shape to the face along with completing a beautiful smile.
Our dentist custom-creates dental bridges to match the size of your jaw, shape of your existing teeth, and color of your tooth enamel. These appliances are crafted in our partner dental lab by molding two or more dental crowns together to form a single unit. Removable dental bridges are held in place by hooking around teeth on either side of the open space, while the ends of a fixed bridge (abutments) bond permanently over these teeth or dental implants for sound support. The pontic, or center portion of the bridge, replaces the tooth that is missing and sits in the space left behind by tooth loss. The entire bridge looks natural and highly aesthetic and appears to rise up from your gum tissues.
Having a dental bridge placed can bring function and confidence back to your smile once again. Made Ya Smile in Katy, TX, offers different styles of bridges, including, porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic, all-metal, cantilever, Maryland-bonded, and implant-supported varieties. Our dentist can help you decide if a fixed or removable bridge would better suit your cosmetic preference, dental needs, and budget along with the type of appliance right for your smile.
How Are Dental Bridges Placed?
Our team here at Made Ya Smile is known for creating dental experiences that are comfortable and pleasant. Your comfort is our priority. We can use sedation dentistry to help you feel calm and relaxed. If you are receiving a fixed bridge, our dentist will numb your tooth and gums and then prepare the anchor teeth by removing some of the enamel so that your bridge can fit evenly over these teeth. An impression of the area will then be taken and sent to our lab for your custom bridge fabrication. We will attach a temporary bridge in place for you to wear while your permanent bridge is being made. This will hold the space for your permanent bridge and provide function and appearance during this time. After about 1 – 2 weeks, your bridge should arrive in our office. We will bring you back in to have your final bridge bonded permanently to your teeth or attached to dental implants previously placed in your jaw. Our dentist will check to make sure your bite is comfortable and can adjust the fit as needed.
The process for receiving a removable bridge is a little different and usually requires less preparation. An impression of the missing tooth area of your mouth will be taken and forward to our dental lab. A couple of weeks later, when your bridge arrives at our office, we will bring you back in to have you try in your new removable bridge. These types of bridges are held in place by attaching to surrounding teeth through metal or plastic clasps. Our dentist will evaluate the fit and adjust your removable bridge for comfort as needed.
How Can I Care for My Dental Bridge?
Following your custom bridge procedure, you may have minor tooth sensitivity, but this should go away after your permanent bridge restoration has been attached. We recommend that you wait to eat until the local anesthetic has fully worn off, to avoid biting your soft tissues inadvertently. Your temporary bridge will be holding the space for your permanent bridge to fit properly. If your temporary comes loose or comes off completely, please let us know right away so that we can re-cement it. Going any time without your temporary bridge may alter the fit of your permanent bridge, which may cause the need for a new restoration to be made.
Even though your new bridge is a prosthetic, the underlying teeth supporting it are still at risk for damage and tooth decay. It is very important to keep up with good brushing and flossing technique each day to keep your bridge free of food particles and plaque so that it can serve your smile in the best possible way. Our team will show you how to floss under your bridge and will offer a technique for keeping it as clean as possible. Your new bridge can provide lasting tooth replacement for several years when taken care of properly. To provide the best possible care for your new bridge and your smile, we recommend keeping up with your routine dental cleaning and exam visits at Made Ya Smile. Our Katy, TX team will be sure to check the health of your teeth and bridge each time you are here for a visit.
