About Digital X-rays
Clinical examinations of your teeth, gums, and jaw are a very important part of detecting any oral concerns, such as damaged restorations, gum disease, and tooth decay on visible surfaces. However, exams do not tell the whole story when it comes to your dental health. To thoroughly evaluate your oral health, our team at Made Ya Smile in Katy, TX uses digital x-rays to view areas that when cannot see when looking into your mouth. The gums cover your bone tissue and tooth roots but with x-rays, we can gain a clear understanding of the health of these structures. Dental x-rays allow our experienced dentist to check for bone loss in the jaw, cavities under fillings or between teeth, tooth impactions, and abscesses or cysts in the bone.
Committed to providing the highest standard of care for your family's oral health, our dentist recommends x-rays at least once each year and as-needed to evaluate specific problems. Our state-of-the-art practice proudly invests in an advanced digital x-rays system that reduces radiation to about 90 percent less than that of traditional film x-rays. Digital x-rays are faster, more convenient, and safer for patients but they also enhance our ability to diagnose oral problems thanks to their higher quality images. Yearly x-rays give our team the chance to improve your family's smiles in the best possible way. Learn more about low-radiation digital x-rays by scheduling a visit with our modern family dental practice.

"I recommend it 1000% I am super grateful! I had a mess in my mouth, I needed crowns on the molars, an implant, a root canal, and more than 4 cavities in different teeth…. 7 years suffering at the hands of many dentists… what one doctor fixed for me, the other destroyed… I couldn't even use dental floss for fear that the old amalgams would come off… Dr. Abraham Thomas is super detailed, not only take care of dental health… also pay attention to aesthetics! 🙏🏻 He and his entire team are Pros. @christian_sba"- C.S. / Google / Aug 05, 2022

Who Is a Good Candidate For Digital X-rays?
Digital x-rays with our team are safe for all patients and may be incorporated into your annual dental exam visits or bi-annual dental cleanings. These images show your jawbone and the portions of your teeth covered by gum tissue in great detail so that our dentist can comprehensively evaluate for hidden problems that may be affecting your smile and dental wellness. Our team uses advanced digital x-rays to look for cavities under restorations and between the teeth, bone loss in the jaw, cysts or tumors, endodontic abscesses, and broken or damaged restorations. X-rays are also extremely helpful in identifying malpositioned teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, unerupted teeth, and developmental concerns in children.
Rest assured, our Made Ya Smile team only takes x-rays when necessary to accommodate your preventive and restorative needs and when you have oral trauma or pain. We choose to use a digital radiograph imaging approach due to the minimal amount of radiation produced and the comfort and convenience factors that come with digital x-ray systems. If you believe you may be pregnant or are expecting, please inform our team right away so that we can take necessary precautions. We always strive to minimize patient exposure and preserve your oral and overall health whenever x-rays are needed.
How Do We Perform Digital X-rays?
To maximize our diagnostic ability along with your oral health, we typically take x-rays at the start of your dental exam and cleaning visit. Our digital x-ray systems are quick, convenient, and comfortable and transmit images within seconds to your chart in our computer system. We use a small sensor to take x-rays, which is placed in different positions around your mouth or in specific areas so that we can see internal portions of your teeth and jaw. Having x-rays taken usually takes less than ten minutes and does not require any chemicals or development process. Once your x-rays are complete, they become a permanent part of your record and are reviewed by our dentist and team.
What Happens After Digital X-rays?
At your first visit with Made Ya Smile in Katy, TX, we will likely take either a full series of x-rays that shows all areas of your mouth or a panoramic x-ray of the jaw and teeth along with four bitewings showing the back teeth. Most patients only require a full set or panoramic x-ray every 3 – 5 years. In between these comprehensive sets, however, we take bitewings to evaluate for bone loss and cavity formation between the teeth, or areas that we cannot clinically see when looking into your mouth. Routine x-rays can protect the future of your smile by allowing our dentist to diagnose dental problems like cavities and bone deterioration before they cause a greater impact on your overall health and smile.
Does My Dental Insurance Cover a Digital X-rays?
Bitewing x-rays are usually covered by dental insurance at least once a year, while panoramic and full series of x-rays are often covered every 3 – 5 years. Before taking your radiographs, our business team will review your specific insurance benefits and let you know if there will be any out-of-pocket cost. Made Ya Smile in Katy, TX is dedicated to helping all patients achieve a healthy smile and offers a convenient in-house dental savings plan for those without dental insurance. We are also proud to work with CareCredit® to bring low-interest financing to patients and accept a range of easy payment options to cover the cost of care.
